Managing chronic kidney disease
key nutrients to watch in chronic kidney disease (CKD)
If you have CKD, your kidneys can’t filter waste as well. Managing certain nutrients helps reduce strain on your kidneys and keep you healthier.
1. Sodium (salt)
- Too much sodium causes fluid buildup, swelling, and high blood pressure.
- Use herbs and spices instead of salt.
- Your doctor or dietitian will tell you how much sodium is safe.
2. Potassium
- Needed for muscles and heart, but too much or too little is dangerous.
- Found in bananas, oranges, potatoes, milk, and meat.
- Your potassium needs depend on your kidney function and medications.
3. Phosphorus
- High levels can weaken bones.
- Found in dairy, processed foods, and soda.
- Check food labels for ingredients with “phos.”
4. Calcium
- Often comes with phosphorus, so balance is key.
- Don’t take calcium or vitamin D supplements without asking your doctor.
5. Protein
- Needed for muscle and healing, but too much can stress kidneys.
- Plant proteins (beans, nuts) are easier on kidneys than meat.
- Your ideal amount of protein depends on your age, weight, and kidney condition.
6. Fluids
- Early CKD: usually no fluid limit.
- Later stages: you may need to limit fluids if you have swelling or make less urine.
- Fluids include soups, ice, and anything liquid at room temperature.
