Women’s Health and Wellness: Stay up to date on screenings
As your health plan, we are your partner on the path to quality care. That is why we recommend staying up to date on your regular health and wellness screenings. Work with your provider to learn which screenings and/or visits you may need.
Regular screenings and wellness visits for women include:
- Annual physical exam
- Breast cancer screening
- Cervical cancer screening
- Colorectal cancer screening
- Blood pressure management
- Diabetic blood test
- Diabetic eye exam
- Diabetic kidney screening
- Osteoporosis management
Health screening guidelines vary based on your age, risk, and other factors. Below are some of the recommendations.
For cervical cancer:
- Women ages 21 to 29 should get a Pap test every three years.
- Women ages 30 to 65 may have a Pap test and an HPV test every five years. Or they can continue to have a Pap test every three years.
- Women over the age of 65 should talk to their provider to see if screening is needed.
For breast cancer:
- Women ages 40 to 74 should get a mammogram every other year.
- Women 75 years of age and older should talk to their provider to see if screening is needed.
For colorectal cancer:
- Women age 45 years and older should talk to their provider about which test is best for them. Options include stool DNA tests and colonoscopies.
For osteoporosis:
- Women who are postmenopausal should talk to their provider about their risk of developing osteoporosis. Menopause causes a drop in estrogen which can lead to loss of bone density.
- Women over the age of 65 should be screened every two years or as advised by their provider.
