Don’t let glaucoma cloud your vision

Glaucoma is a buildup of pressure on the optic nerve located in the back of your eye. It can cause vision loss and blindness.

What are the symptoms?

Glaucoma occurs slowly. Over time, you may start to lose vision, especially your side vision (peripheral vision). In the early stages, many people can’t tell that their vision is changing.

If you begin to notice vision loss, see your optometrist right away. Without treatment, your vision will get worse. Glaucoma can eventually cause blindness.

Meridian members can visit an optometrist for eye care needs without prior authorization.

Am I at risk for galucoma?

Some people are at a higher risk. Risk factors include:

  • Family history of glaucoma
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Eye injury
  • Over the age of 60, especially if you’re Hispanic/Latino
  • African Americans over the age of 40

If you have any of these risk factors, talk to your optometrist. Early detection is important for slowing the progression of the disease.
