Winter Storm Update and Warming Center Resources

A strong winter storm is expected to hit Illinois tomorrow, January 23, 2026. The storm will bring very cold temperatures, snow, ice, and dangerous wind chills. These conditions can make travel difficult and can be unsafe if you are outside for too long. Below, you’ll find information about the storm, places you can go to stay warm, and important emergency resources.

Temperatures

  • Highs near 0°F and lows around -9°F on January 23 
  • Wind chills between -20°F and -35°F, posing a risk of frostbite within 10 minutes 

Precipitation

  • Heavy snow, mixed precipitation, and freezing rain expected 
  • Snow and ice totals will vary by region but may create dangerous travel conditions 

Safety tips

  • Dress in warm layers; cover exposed skin 
  • Keep blankets, water, and a charged phone in your vehicle 
  • Avoid travel unless absolutely necessary 
  • Monitor for frostbite or hypothermia; seek medical attention immediately if symptoms arise
