HEALTHIER PREGNANCIES FOR ALL MOMS-TO-BE
Date: 06/03/24
As we look back and celebrate the progress that was made on Juneteenth, we must not forget that there is still work to be done. Healthcare is one area where minorities are still seeking equality. Especially Black women.
The U.S. has a high maternal mortality rate. But Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related causes than white women, according to the CDC. There are many reasons for this. One factor is that Black women have higher rates of chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. These can increase the risk of pregnancy complications, like preeclampsia.
Here are some tips for a healthier pregnancy:
- Eat a healthy diet. This includes lean protein, whole grains, fruit, and vegetables.
- Stay active. If you are pregnant, speak to your provider about exercise.
- Know your numbers. This means monitoring your blood pressure and blood sugar numbers.
- Be sure to go to all your recommended prenatal appointments.
- Find ways to manage your stress.
- Take prescribed medications for conditions, as directed by your provider.
- Avoid alcohol and drugs.
