RSV VACCINES ARE AVAILABLE FOR THOSE AT HIGH RISK

Date: 11/08/23

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus. It usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. But for some it can become severe. High risk groups include infants, young children, and older adults. Prevention is key for protecting those at high risk of severe cases.

  • Adults 60 years and older should talk to their healthcare provider about getting the vaccine. There are two options: Arexvy ® and Abrysvo ®. Both are single-dose vaccines. They provide protection for at least two RSV seasons. These two adult vaccines are given at your provider’s office or any pharmacy that administers vaccines.
  • If you are 32 to 36 weeks pregnant during RSV season, talk to your provider about getting Abrysvo ®. It can help protect your baby against the virus.
  • There are two medications for infants and children that can help prevent RSV: Beyfortus ® and Synagis ®. They provide antibodies to help fight the virus. Ask your provider which medicine is right for your child. These two pediatric medicines are given at your provider’s office.

RSV season in Illinois is from October 1, 2023 – February 29, 2024. The CDC recommends high risk groups get a vaccine as soon as possible. Call your provider today. Or visit a pharmacy near you if you are an adult 60 years or older.
