Date: 10/12/21

A new bill, passed by the Illinois House and Senate earlier this year and signed by Governor JB Pritzker in August, that reforms the use of prior authorization goes in effect January 1, 2022.

The Prior Authorization Reform Act institutes requirements for disclosure and review of prior authorization and denial of claims or coverage by a utilization review organization. It also specifies prior authorization requirements and restrictions. Additionally, the bill sets requirements for utilization review of healthcare organizations’ obligations with respect to prior authorizations in nonurgent circumstances, urgent healthcare services, and emergency healthcare services.
